We are still in Puerto Viejo, on the south atlantic coast of Costa Rica. There, we have tested for you the two most popular Trip Advisor rated activities….
First, a chocolate tour…. Yummy…
The chocolate tour we have done
We went with the company above that we recommend without any hesitation. Indeed, the property owner itself (the property includes cacao plantation, retail store and chocolate tour) leads the tour. And he really knows about what he is talking.
Everyone listen carefully
The tour starts in the cacao plantation where he explains that the whole coast used to be filled up with cacao trees before they remove most of them and plant banana trees. Indeed at this time, the selling price of banana went up and it became more interesting to sell banana than cacao.
Very young cacao (almost a flower) and almost mature cacao fruit…
Cacao… caroline loved it
After explaining how to grow cacao, it goes through the different steps of processing cacao until it gets presented to the factory and become chocolate.
View from where we drink and eat chocolate…
Before visiting the factory (don’t expect a huge factory !) we have one hour of chocolate tasting… Up to 4 types of chocolate, all coming from different plantations around Puerto Viejo. Then some hot chocolate as it used to be made before (not really the same that you would have in a starbuck coffee shop) and finally some chocolate to be mixed with spices and plants to discover the best combination… I really love the chocolate mixed with garlic and mint…
Tasting starts now…
Here the best part of the Chocolate tour: make your own combination of chocolate with herbs and spices.

Finally, we arrive at the factory where one operator use the various equipment (some of them are local made) to produce an excellent chocolate that you won’t find in the supermarket around the world. The production is small, so if you want some, the best way is to get there.
Yummy. In the factory you can taste this chocolate….
The second tour we undertook was to visit the jaguar rescue centre.. Don’t expect to see a Jaguar. They used to have one, but it is not here anymore. It is a very good place to interact with rescued wild animals such as monkeys, birds (owl, eagles), three-toed sloths, wild cats, snakes, spiders, etc…
The good thing is entry fee is directly used to run the centre.. So if you love animal, have a look there. More info on www.jaguarrescues.com
The best moment of our time inside the rescue center is when you play with the monkey inside their cage… So much good time.
Green and black frog
Red frog… can you see it?
I want to stay with you…
Smile to the camera
My hand, your hand
can I stay there. the view is better
Today plan is sleeping
Same plan for us: sleeping…
Can you find me?
Yes, I am big..
You want some too?
Red eyes, blue, yellow and green skin… A good mix of colors…
and orange feet
The centre receives and rehabilitates wildlife such as this eagle.
Hello you… Why are you looking at me like that…
That is it for Puerto Viejo. Our next move is to San Jose, capital of Costa Rica but where we won’t stay long before going to the pacific coast of Costa Rica.
Blog you soon,
