Every Sunday and Thursday takes place on the height of La Paz, the Alto Market, located on the suburb of El Alto.
This market, on the top of the cliff above La Paz City at 4,100m is, apparently, an dangerous market, when you listen to other foreigners/tourists like us. But the local didn’t say us anything specific. So it was with a bit of apprehension.
El Alto is the popular suburb of La Paz, and is the one that holds all the power.. Not economical or political, but the power to take La Paz hostage by blocking the only highway that is going down to La Paz… So when people of El Alto has to protest, they just have to lock the highway to get what they want.
To get there, we took a micro bus to get up there for 1.5 Soles taking the famous highway.
Arrived at the bottom of the market, we can see an incessant flow of people coming in and out. This massive market spreads out over 5km just above La Paz city.
Once in, you can buy anything you need for your house, neighbour, car, build, fix etc…. I let you appreciate this through the pictures below.
Blog you soon, still from El Alto
